Anza-Borrego Desert: Carrizo West Fork Palms Second - Jacumba Jim Canyon

Rating *****
Length 4.5 mile (return) - 4 Hour (round trip). Easy at first/Moderate.
Elevation 1040 - 1590 feet
Access Take the signed exit Carrizo wash close to mile 48.5. Drive the wash road for about 5.3 mile and park.

Start hiking up the rock filled wash or along the road (West).
Not much further, you will hit running water, we've yet to see a fork of the Carrizo Gorge with clear running water.
Plenty of small clear pools and running water from a spring.
Pretty easy so far, going left or right following the water in this narrow canyon.

The mesquite barrier is real dense, so head out of the canyon at point "Out".
This is rather easy once you are out of the canyon, except for the Cholla, plenty of them over here, but there is room for a safe hike.

All of the sudden the water is gone, so are the Mesquite and the canyon is accessible again.
Another barrier and the canyon narrows, it takes about 2 hour round trip to get up to this point.
Stay on the canyon floor up to a dry fall.
The fall can be bypassed on both sides, the best way is to go up on the left (south) or go up and down on the right side (north).
Passing the fall is probably the biggest obstacle on this hike, after that is only a short trip up to the final palm oasis.

How to get here:

Take the signed exit Carrizo wash close to mile 48.5, just past the Bow Willow camp ground (from the North)
Drive the wash road for about 5.3 mile at a rocky stretch.
Road conditions change a lot, I've seen regular cars on part of the road, but in some years the soft sand warning is warranted.
You may encounter a rocky stretch that is close to the limit of our SUV (Subaru Forester).
We parked about 200 Yards short of the wash, no sense to risk anything for such a short stretch.
A 4x4 is highly recommended and most likely needed.
