Anza-Borrego Desert: Fish Creek Mud Hills Loop

Rating *****
Length 5.8 mile (Loop) - 3 Hour, 15 minutes (Loop). Moderate.
Elevation 550 - 845 feet
Access Fish creek wash. AWD recommended, most of the time high clearance will do, but check first.

A scenic hike in the Mud Hills west of Elephant Knees.

A GPS only route best followed clockwise.
The hike is relative easy, but requires knowledge how to safely cross mud hills.
The route follows drainages, goes over mud hills and shell layers.

Warning:
Expect the terrain to change, so at some point you many need to alter the route.
Water can create hollow space underneath the mud hills and drainages as it tunnels it's way down stream.
Mud might pose a problem after rain, even months after rain.

How to get here:

Take Split Mountain Road for about 8 miles.

Follow the road towards the Fish Creek campground.
Where the road starts is mostly in the middle of the wash.

Road condition vary a lot from year to year.
But normally any high clearance AWD should do. The road is sandy with some rocks.

[In some years a regular car can make it all the way towards the wind caves. But unless you check at the visitor center, don't even try.]

Once you see the wind cave sign on the left side of the wash (after 5 miles), stay in the same wash, staying a little to the left.
Don't take the first right fork, but keep left (South Fork).
