Twin Lakes Loop

Rating *****
Length 5.4 mile (Loop) - 3 Hour, 30 minutes (Loop). Easy/Moderate.
Elevation 4040 - 4520 feet
Access High clearance, maybe 4x4, see below

A loop hike that follows dirt roads.
The south side of the loop is a narrower motorcycle route and good hiking trail.
There is plenty of shade in prime Adenostoma sparsifolium | Red shank country.
We didn't find Upper Twin Lake, but there is a deep gully, the dam probably broke and now it's just a dry creek.

At the top of the hike we cross the creek on a good dirt road and head back up the north side of the canyon.
Here, the wide, well-maintained road probably serves as a fire road with wide clearings and almost no shade.

Lower Twin Lake will hold water even in a dry year, as the other is man-made and certainly not large enough to be called a lake.

How to get here:
On the 79 exit near mile: 45.7, take the Chihuahua Valley Road (paved) exit to Puerta la Cruz.
Follow the good gravel road up a fairly steep hill, then follow it steeply down to the "Park" point (marker 021).
