This hike loops through two wide unnamed washes.
It is mostly on sand, with some rocky stretches, and it passes over a mostly flat mesa.
Note: Hiking into a drainage from the mesa is not the best route, as the drainage is rather rocky.
Stay high along the drainage and descend when it meets a wide wash.
Warning: The hike starts on an Indian reservation, but there are no "keep out" signs.
From Imperial, we cross into San Diego County and hike into Borrego Desert State Park.
How to get here:
Option 1:
From the casino/gas station at the "Wash Road" point, there is a faint, unmaintained wash road with shrubs and rocks.
Follow it up to Pole Line Road, which is mentioned below.
The most problematic aspects are parking and turning.
Option 2 is longer.
From the Salton City Arco gas station, head north on Highway 86.
Take the "Vista Del Mar/Coombs" exit. It's not a well-maintained road. Immediately turn left, and you will enter the wash, heading west under the highway bridge.
Past the two highway bridges, turn 45 degrees out of the Grave Wash. Follow the Pole Line Road heading north/west.
At the unsigned point "Xing," you can drive up the wash or park at the "Park" point.
Warning:
Do not attempt this route without a 4x4 vehicle and be prepared to cross many drainages and washes.
The "road" is alongside a power line, so expect some maintenance on the "road."
This route crosses Indian land.
