This map shows the roads leading to most of the hikes (When Show roads is checked).

Road conditions can change from day to day. Never assume that a road is in good condition just because you drove on it the year before or last week.
Therefore, even a road marked green may be impossible to drive on a certain day.
The colors and descriptions are only an indication.

Green: Roads as good as they get.
Blue: A more challenging road, but any 4x4 with ground clearance should be able to drive it.
Red: A challenging road, but any 4x4 with good ground clearance should be able to drive it.
Black: More difficult roads, but I drove them in a Subaru Forester or RAV4 on a certain date. The only black road we were unable to drive was: From The Squeeze to Heart Attack Hill.

Deep soft sand is the main concern. Where to expect deep sand:

Parts of the Borrego Badlands:
Carrizo Wash, part of the Overland Route.
Fish Creek, some years.
Where you don't expect it:

Of course, rocks and boulders may pose the biggest obstacle, but at least you can see them in advance.

If possible, check the ranger station, but make sure the information is accurate and that the person you're talking to knows the roads you want to drive on.
Sometimes postings are months old and no longer accurate.

As always, be prepared for the worst. Carry enough water to last an extra day in case you get stuck.
On some roads, you may be the only person around for days.

Cell phone coverage is poor in parts of Borrego Springs, so don't expect coverage where you're going.
I normally put phone in fight mode on hikes because the only thing it does is drain the battery.
