Anza-Borrego Desert: Chuckwalla Wash

Rating *****
length 6.6 mile, 3 hour 25 Minutes(Return trip). Easy/Moderate.
Elevation 2040 - 3600 feet
Access From Borrego on Highway 78 mile 75, the first dirt road on the left, signed Lizard. Follow the rough road up to the end. You need some ground clearance.

Follow the wash up to the North Pinyon peak.

At the parking, keep going further into the Lizard Canyon, take a rocky fork to the right just before a dry waterfall. In other words, hike up to the fall and go back and head South/West.

Don't follow the small wash too long, after about 100 yards go out of the wash and go cross country.
Head South, not too low not too high up and stay out of the washes.

Once in the Chuckwalla wash head uphill. (Right / South West)
The wash is easy to walk in, mostly firm sand.
Some small boulders and sand again, when the canyon narrows, more boulders block the way.

Two short boulder passages fairly easy to go up and a nice sandy wash again.
The peak isn't too clear and it's best to go cross country when the canyon gets too narrow.
Enjoy the views from the peak and head back the same way.
